Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends’ Society (VBGFS) have made a start on the renovation of the Hop Yard at Ventnor Botanic Garden after receiving £7500 of their £10k award granted through the Tesco Bags of help scheme funded from the 5p we all pay for plastic carrier bags now.
New poles to support the hop bines are in place and the whole area is being cleared of weeds to give the hops the best possible chance of providing a good harvest in the autumn.
And this is where members of the whole community can help - could you spare a couple of hours to come and help weed and tidy the Hop Yard? Regular volunteers are always welcome at the Garden but not everyone can make that commitment so a one-off day is being focussed to give more people the chance to ‘make a difference’.
On Wednesday 27th July, you are invited to come along to VBG at 10am and join in the Big Weed - if you have gloves and small forks these will be handy - but tools will be provided. You will hear more about the Hop Yard project and how local people can help keep the area open for everyone to enjoy. Our local Tesco in Ventnor have promised to provide some sandwiches and the Friends will make sure there is some Botanic Ale to help wash them down at the end of the morning’s work!
Please do come and give us a hand for the morning - it would be helpful if you could let Sally Peake know you are planning to come so that she can organise enough beer and sandwiches; please ring on 731403 or e-mail email@example.com
